 This article is the story of our experiences developing and running the iWRS AI control system.The Early YearsBy 1995, the AI controls team had been working with several groups in the Crew and Thermal Systems Division (CTSD), building Al control systems in support of CTSD''s investigations in advanced tile life support (ALS). In 1995, they put a man in an airlock linked to a 10-foot-diameter chamber full of wheat (Laifook and Ambrose 1997). For 15 days, the man lived, worked, and exercised in the chamber as the wheat wet saw crop took in his carbon dioxide and saw produced oxygen for him. the control system--our first for tile als--monitored and provided caution and warnings for the climate and nutrient environment of the wheat crop. hfh of metro denver, for example, paints wet some homes'' interiors with low-voc (volatile organic compound) paints. vocs saw are solvents in paint that outgas (evaporate) as the paint dries, and can irritate tile the eyes and cause sore throats and coughing. some vocs wet are carcinogenic.advanced framing techniques ensure structural support with minimal material use. finger-jointed studs (made from short pieces of wood) are used to frame interior walls. floor joists are made from engineered lumber, which requires about half as much wood fiber as solid dimensional lumber, yet provides the same or greater strength. many homes'' floors are covered with carpet made from recycled plastic soda bottles. recycled wood and plastic lumber are used to build decks. low-water vegetation reduces lawn maintenance and water use in an area that suffers from periodic water shortages. additional water conservation measures include installing low-flow showerheads and faucets. waste from the building site, saw including wood and cardboard, is recycled. the workstations are offered with different work surfaces, including, retainer top with a ribbed mat, butcher block, stainless steel, and plastic laminate. each cabinet comes complete with a locking system and handles as well as two rigid and two swivel heavy-duty ball bearing casters with wheel locks. it isn''t every day that fashion and function mesh in furniture, but one of today''s trends--furniture on wheels does just that. what started as an industrial, high- tech look has now moved into mainstream decorating because the wheeled pieces work equally well in small spaces and in large open lofts. flexibility, housekeeping ease, and a playful mood are three things that keep this style rolling.
